Epidemiological Studies on Dental Caries in Korea

Abstract
The objects herewith consisted of the both groups of 1,715 children of C - W - Primary School in Seoul city and 1,602 children of D - J - Primary School in the remoted rural area of Kyungki Province. The age range of them was from 6 to 15 years old. The sex ratio was 1 to 1. The difference of the social status between the two groups was that while the former group was above the middle, the latter one was below the low.
The method of surveying caries was based on the geometrical dental inspection card adopted by Bodecker.
The result of the survey was further analysed with caries indices such as DMF prevalence rate, DMFT and DMFS for each group. The conclusion can be summarized in the following:
1. The prevalence rate of DMF as well as DMFT, DMFS are higher in the former (urban) group than the latter. On the other hand, the prevalence of periodontal diseases is predominated in the rural area.

2. The ratio of DMFT/DMFT showed higher in the urban area until the age of eight. Above it there was no difference between the both areas.

The regional difference of the dental caries incidence seemed to be responsible for the different socio-economic status in these areas.
